Urban Beaches
Pajuçara, Ponta Verde and Jatiúca are very frequented, with bars and cabins on the beach with live music.
Jaraguá - The Jaraguá neighborhood, an ancient bohemian redoubt, is today the hottest reference to the Maceió nightlife. With its revitalization, the old warehouses and two-floor houses acquired colors and shapes and have been transformed in bars, nightclubs, theaters and restaurants. Jaraguá still keeps part of our history and stands out for the architectural richness of its buildings and old mansions.
Cruz das Almas (Souls' Cross) - A place that used to be an Indian cemetery, it is heavy with mysticism, strengthened by the force of its waves, where in daylight it is a surfers paradise and on moonlight nights is the ideal scenario for lovers. These, without being aware, celebrate the legend of the Indian couple that were sacrificed for belonging to rival tribes. People say they come and bathe at the sea, when the moon is high. Aside from the folklore, the beach is urban, with tents, restaurants and hotels.
Jatiúca - A beach whose name comes from the Indian term "Y-ati-ucá", which means "Tick", the insect. There is also the version that its origin is due to the "tick" (castor bean) that grows in the "ticker" (castor bean tree). The beach is approximately 4.5 km north of downtown. Its sea waters are turbulent almost all over its extension and, for that reason, surf and body boarding competitions frequently take place there. Since it is in downtown, it is totally provided with restaurants, beach booths with showers, jogging and bike courses, fitness gyms, shopping center, hotels, inns - in short: all required structure for the tourist's satisfaction.
Ponta Verde (Green Point) - A stretch of land that invades the sea, covered by the green of coconut trees. It was this phenomenon that named one of the most frequented Maceió beaches and that in the past housed the city's most famous symbol: "Gogó da Ema" (Rhea's Adam's Apple). It was, in fact, a coconut tree that grew in excess and its trunk looked like a rhea's neck. It was near the current Alagoas Iate Club, Clube Alagoinha (Maceió Yacht Club). The reefs form natural pools and it is common, at low tide, to see people bathing at these pools, mostly near the lighthouse. Ponta Verde is trendy beach. A spot for having fun and gaining a love partner. There are tents with music live, bars, restaurants, snack bars, hotels, etc.
Pajuçara - It has the charm of who used to be the Alagoas shore's little princess. The inspiring muse of singers and poets that sang their verses. It is about 2 km from downtown. The most known Maceió beach's name comes from the Indian tupy language, meaning "land of spines", or "region of spines". The Pajuçara's waters are purely peaceful, which makes them safe for swimming, especially for the children. It is also in Pajuçara (near the little handicraft shop) that the fishermen rafts sail from towards the natural pool, formed by the coral reefs. There the tourist will find floating bars to enjoy the city's spices.
Avenida da Paz - The background for the most beautiful sunset in Maceió was named in homage to the end of Second World War.
Sobral - The beach that gave its name to the district. It was the landmark of an era, when illustrious children from the land used to be honored with nobleness titles. It was the golden days of barons, viscounts and commendataries. The area next to it, formed by farms and coconut trees, belonged to Mr. Manoel Sobral Pinto, Comendador Sobral, that gave his name to the site.
Pontal da Barra - The beach which in past times was surrounded by the mistery and beauty of moving dunes and native coconut trees is still today a conniver to one of the most beautiful natural phenomena, namely the meeting of the Mandaú Pond with the sea. If contemplated, the sunset can take the most sensitive ones to a state of wonder and contemplation.
